Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduces a brand-new crafting system that lets players manufacture their own tools and decorative items using raw materials such as branches, wood, stone, clay, and iron.
While a majority of these can be easily found on your home island, collecting rarer ones like bamboo and gold might require you to go on Mystery Tours and visit different islands.
In this guide, we’ll show you where to find crafting materials for making tools, furniture, and more as well as offer tips for getting as many materials as possible in a single day.

Where To Find Fruit
Fruit is not only one of the most beneficial materials in ACNH but also one of the easiest to find, considering every island has its own native fruit. To collect fruit, simply walk up to a fruit tree and shake it by holding the ‘A’ button to get three pieces of fruit to drop.
Here is a list of every fruit type:
Eating fruit will temporarily increase your strength and allow you to pick up trees and break rocks. Fruit can also be used to craft a variety of furniture or planted to produce more fruit trees.
To obtain new fruit types, including non-native coconuts, head out on Mystery Tours using Nook Miles Tickets, or visit other players’ islands via online multiplayer.
Where To Find Branches And Wood
Branches can be found on the ground near trees and have a chance of dropping whenever you shake a tree. Wood, on the other hand, can only be obtained by hitting a tree with a Flimsy Axe, Stone Axe, or upgraded Axe.
Here is a list of every wood type:
You can hit a tree up to three times to receive three random pieces of wood. However, doing so with an upgraded Axe will cause the tree to fall and produce a stump. Therefore, we recommend using a Stone Axe or Flimsy Axe unless you want to destroy trees.
Where To Find Stone And Clay
Stone and clay can be obtained by striking rocks with an upgraded Shovel or Axe. You can get up 8 pieces of stone and clay by rapidly striking a rock. However, achieving this requires some strategizing since each strike slowly pushes your character further back.
We recommend placing an item directly behind you that cannot be moved, such as fencing, a DIY workbench, really anything that can be placed outdoors. Next, stand at the corner of the rock and dig two holes on both sides of your character to prevent them from moving sideways.
Lastly, mash away at the ‘A’ button in order to get as many materials as you can to drop.
Note: Each day, one random rock will become a Lucky Money rock and produce Bells instead of materials when hit.
Where To Find Iron And Gold Nuggets
After you purchase the Pretty Good Tools recipe from the NookStop kiosk in Resident Services, rocks will have a chance of dropping iron and gold nuggets when struck. While iron nuggets are easy enough to get, gold nuggets are much rarer.
Therefore, we recommend not selling any you happen to find and instead save them for a special DIY project that calls for gold.
Rocks are scattered throughout your island and more will appear as you progress through the game, thus increasing the chances of finding a gold nugget. If you have already exhausted your island’s rocks for the day, you can find more by visiting random islands during Mystery Tours.
Where To Find Bamboo
Bamboo is a rare tree type that will not grow natively on your island and can be used to craft a variety of DIY projects. To find bamboo, you will have to go on Mystery Tours until you get a random island with bamboo trees to spawn.
Additionally, you may receive bamboo shoots in the mail after purchasing Turnips from Daisy Mae every Sunday that can then be planted to grow a Bamboo tree.
Once a bamboo tree has fully matured, they will produce a bamboo shoot next to them which can be dug up using a shovel and replanted to grow a second tree. Just like regular trees, bamboo trees can be harvested up to three times using a Flimsy Axe, Stone Axe, or upgraded Axe.
Note: During spring, bamboo trees have a chance of dropping young spring bamboo, a rare material that can be used to craft seasonal DIY projects or sold for 200 Bells each at Nook’s Cranny.
Where To Find Wasp Nests
While you may find yourself wanting to avoid wasp nests, they can be really useful for crafting Medicine as well as DIY projects such as Beekeeper Hives. To find a wasp nest, shake every tree until one drops.
We recommend having your Net out while you do this to avoid getting stung. The nest will stay on the ground whether or not the wasps sting you.
Each day five wasp nests are generated on your island, so finding them is only a matter of shaking each tree until you get one to drop. If you have already exhausted the number of wasp nests on your island, you can go on Mystery Tours to find more.
Note: Wasp nests will not drop if your island is currently being visited by another player.
Where To Find Flowers and Weeds
Some DIY projects will call for weeds or different types of flowers. While weeds are very common and appear across your entire island, flowers will only grow natively on your island’s cliffs, which can be reached via a ladder.
New flowers can be obtained by purchasing them from Nook’s Cranny in the form of seeds or collecting them during Mystery Tours. To collect a flower or weed, walk up to it and press the ‘Y’ button.
Here is a list of every flower type:
Since every island gets assigned only one native flower, you’re going to have to go on Mystery Tours or visit other players’ islands to make up for any ones you may be missing. While you’re there, make sure to hit up their resident shop to see what seeds are currently for sale.
Where To Find Star Fragments
Star fragments are a rare crafting material that can be found along your island’s shore the day after a meteor shower has occurred. However, to get them to spawn, you would need to have made a wish during the meteor shower the day before.
To make a wish, have your character look up into the sky with an empty hand and press the ‘A’ button just as a star passes by.
If the wish is successful, the star will flash, and a special sound will play. Up to 10 star fragments will spawn on one or more parts of your island’s shore the following day. Star fragments can be used to craft an array of wands as well as the zodiac furniture set. They can also be sold at Nook’s Cranny for 250 Bells.
Where To Find Trash
Previous Animal Crossing games saw players either keeping trash they found or selling it for some measly Bells. However, ACNH introduces a third option that allows you to recycle trash for different DIY projects. The most common ones you may need are an empty can, a boot, and a tire.
There are two ways to find trash: by checking the Community Recycling Bin located inside Resident Services and by fishing.
Since the first method requires you to wait a couple of days until items get donated by your villagers, we recommend you try fishing for trash with either a Flimsy Fishing rod or a standard one.
Where To Find Customization Kits
New Horizons introduces the ability to customize crafted DIY projects using Customization Kits. After you have completed Tom Nook’s customization workshop, he’ll award you 50 Customization Kits to get you started.
To obtain additional Kits, you will have to buy them from Nook’s Cranny via the closet in the back of the shop for 600 Bells each. Items that can be personalized will have a variety of options to select from. Some items may require 2 kits while others demand 4 or more.
