Developed by BioWare and released by EA, Dragon Age is a respected fantasy RPG franchise that chronicles the numerous escapades of the denizens of Thedas.

While a new Dragon Age game has been in development since 2015, chances are we won’t see Dragon Age 4 release for quite some time.

Set in an alternate 17^th century where magic exists, it casts you as a noble suffering from a mysterious family illness that decides to visit a mystical island in search of a cure.

However, things become complicated when tensions begin to rise between the island’s natives and encroaching colonizers.

Much like in Dragon Age, the player is in charge of deciding whether to form alliances, rivalries, or remain neutral throughout the story.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is a follow-up to the critically acclaimed RPG in which players are cast as a Watcher, beings with the power to analyze souls and learn from their memories.

This ends up playing a crucial role in the game’s story as Eothas, the god of light and rebirth, returns to the world with grave implications for its inhabitants.

Not soon after, souls begin to get stripped from their corporal bodies, prompting the player to embark on a dangerous voyage across a vast and undiscovered archipelago.

Like Dragon Age, gameplay builds on the foundation of classic D&D gameplay with an abundance of hand-crafted questlines where choices truly matter.

While not fantasy, the Wasteland series is sure to scratch a similar RPG itch for Dragon Age fans that also have an affinity for the classic isometric Fallout games.

A good starting point is the most recent entry, Wasteland 3, which sees you venturing into an irradiated frozen wasteland during the 22^nd century where twisted cults and other factions vie for control.

Players act as leader of the Desert Rangers, a squad of compelling gunslingers trying to survive in this infernal new post-apocalyptic world.

Similar to Dragon Age, the game affords a lot of freedom in how you decide to flesh out your characters’ builds, approach each challenge, and explore the world.

Along with Dragon Age, BioWare is known for the sci-fi RPG series Mass Effect, which has its own history of both critically acclaimed and controversial releases, spin-offs, and more recently, remasters.

Seeing as the original Mass Effect came out in the early 2000s, the preferred way to play through the original trilogy is via the Mass Effect Legendary Edition

In it, you play as either a male or female Commander Shepard as they travel across the universe defending planets from a race of powerful machines called Reapers.

Players are joined by a squad of companions with diverse backgrounds that will lend a hand in battle and weigh in on important decisions that carry over between games.

Baldur’s Gate is a historic RPG franchise that dates back even further than Dragon Age and received a recent update with Baldur’s Gate 3 entering Steam Early Access.

The game ditches the previous installments’ real-time combat system in favor of turn-based battles in fully 3D environments packed with details and modern graphical effects.

In many ways, it plays similar to games like Fire Emblem, another turn-based strategy RPG series that will no doubt appeal to Dragon Age fans.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is almost ready for its complete 1.0 release. However, interested players can already enjoy lots of content in the game.

Another non-fiction RPG that comes well-recommended is Obsidian’s black comedy sci-fi romp The Outer Worlds.

As we wait for news about TES6, let’s go back to one of the greatest open-world RPGs ever with the Skyrim Anniversary Edition.

This new version bundles together a decade’s worth of content that includes the critically acclaimed base game, add-ons from Skyrim Special Edition, and a host of optional Creation Club content.

Those familiar will remember the story takes place 200 years after TES: Oblivion and sees you stepping into the shoes of the Dragonborn, a warrior destined to battle and defeat a powerful dragon.

Similar to Dragon Age, the Elder Scrolls games feature flexible real-time combat systems that support a wide array of playstyles and allow you to recruit companions for limitless adventures.

The Witcher is yet another universally acclaimed fantasy RPG franchise that needs no introduction and has won countless awards, most recently with the third installment, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The game has you reprising your role as the contemplative monster hunter Geralt as he embarks on an adventure to locate his missing daughter and save her from the clutches of a mystical cult.

Reminiscent of games like Dragon Age, the Witcher 3 offers an exhaustive number of storylines to follow, each tied to different characters, bosses, and locations.

To this point, the game affords no shortage of opportunities to venture off the beaten path and hunt exotic wildlife, gather ingredients for potion-making, or casually explore.

The sequel to Larian Studios’ well-received fantasy RPG transports players to the magical world of Rivellon inspired by D&D tabletop adventures. 

In Divinity: Original Sin 2, you’re given the option to form a party from six preset heroes or craft your own before heading off to explore the world.

During your journey, you’ll witness characters form bonds that carry over into turn-based battles with a myriad of win conditions beyond just slaying your opponent.

Whether smiting your foes with powerful elemental attacks, using wit to help them see the err of their ways, or cheesing your way to victory, Original Sin 2 rewards curiosity and creativity at every turn.

Despite not featuring any references to magic or otherworldly elements, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a worthwhile RPG that will appeal to Dragon Age fans.

The game takes place during the reign of the Holy Roman Empire and sees you playing as the son of a blacksmith who decides to join a group of rebels after his family and village get wiped out.

Deliverance’s map functions as a living, breathing open world with many simulation-driven systems that result in a unique mix of RPG and survival gameplay.

In addition to maintaining your character’s hunger, thirst, sleep, and hygiene, the game tasks you with navigating the many intricacies of medieval social dynamics and combat strategies.

It can be tough to keep up with every new fantasy RPG release, so you’d be forgiven for not remembering or missing out on Dragon’s Dogma entirely.

Originally released in 2012, the Capcom developed/published title drops players in a fantasy setting, not unlike that of the Dragon Age games.

Taking on the role of a custom avatar dubbed the Arisen, players embark on an adventure to slay a powerful dragon along with a host of other mythological monstrosities.

Originally released in 2002, Neverwinter Nights is a long-standing MMORPG based on the D&D ruleset with support for custom campaigns where one player takes on the role of dungeon master.

While it’s best enjoyed as a multiplayer experience, solo players will find more than enough content to explore at their own pace.
