Bottom Line
Looking for one of the best office chairs out there?
The Herman Miller Embody chair is considered one of those by a large amount of people, including professionals and doctors.
If you have a job that requires you to sit in front of a computer for long periods, you’ll be inseparable from the aches and pains that this brings.
What if there was a chair that could somehow resolve these problems? Now, bear in mind that we’re not talking about some $10 plastic accessory that you’ll find on a TV shopping channel.
As you can tell, the title was sarcastic. We love this chair. The Herman Miller Embody is an office chair that was designed by a team of doctors. This is a chair whose main focus is to keep your back pain free if you sit for more than four hours a day.
With that in mind, it’s quite a bit more expensive than a regular office chair, but we feel this price is justified, and we’ll tell you why.
Everybody talks about the importance of buying a chair with good lumbar support, but if the chair doesn’t fit you, it’s likely to do more harm than good.
The Embody allows you to adjust the height and incline of its back to find a setting that fits your body shape perfectly. This means a lower chance of straining your back while working – an injury that can see you laid up in bed for weeks.
Not only that, but you can adjust the height of the seat, turn off the tilt feature and adjust the height of the arms. Pretty good, right? Now let’s talk about aesthetics.
This chair comes in 16 different colors, from the traditional black to a striking peacock shade. Don’t worry – all of the colors are relatively muted and completely appropriate for office work.
These quiet colors, combined with the polyester fabric, ensure that this chair is resistant to stains and tearing.
By this time, you’ve probably noticed that this chair doesn’t have a headrest. This is by design – headrests promote lousy posture, and besides when was the last time you used one anyway? This isn’t a deal-breaker: we can bet that after a week or so, you won’t even notice it’s missing.
Because of the heavy-duty construction of this model, it’s suitable for people who are a little larger, as well. It can easily handle 300lb of weight, no problem. So, is it a good fit for your workspace?
The Embody is 42” tall at its lowest setting, and almost 30” deep and wide. It weighs 51 pounds, so it’s fairly heavy. That said, it comes with carpet casters and isn’t a problem to move around on.
You know that muted excitement you feel when a new office chair arrives? You’re looking forward to trying it out, but you know you’re going to have to navigate the instructions and find the right screwdriver?
The Embody skips this step. It comes fully assembled, so while the delivery person might have a slightly more difficult job, you can jump right in when it arrives.
Now, we know that the price might put you off a bit. This chair costs a little under $1400, but look at it this way: how much is your health worth to you?
If you knew you were going to hurt yourself and be unable to work for weeks, would you pay $1400 to avoid this? Would your employer? The Herman Miller Embody isn’t just a chair; it’s an investment in yourself.
Because it’s so expensive, Herman Miller wants to make sure it’s worth its price. They include a 12-year warranty with this product.
This means that should anything go wrong, you can have it replaced at no extra cost whatsoever. Assuming it lasts the full length of the warranty, that’s only $105 a year for a product that keeps you healthy. Frankly speaking, this is a bargain.
Overall, we were very impressed with the Herman Miller Embody. It’s a solid chair with several great features that really make it a pleasure to use.
It makes sense to spend a little more when it comes to your well being. Back injuries are a lot easier to get than they are to heal.
For this reason, we recommend this chair to anybody that sits for long periods of time. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll never want to use a cheaper office chair again.
